Casey is always ready to push you to YOUR next level!

We would like to take the time to officially welcome Casey Mouw as our newest addition to the CrossFit Sioux Falls training staff. Casey is currently a collegiate wrestler at Augustana College going for his B.S. in Fitness Management. Casey has proven himself to not only be a great athlete but a fantastic coach as well. We are very lucky to have him be apart of our community.

Read more about Casey on his bio HERE

What makes a GREAT CrossFit COACH? Casey, Cody, Annie and myself uphold professional standards, that “raise our game” in the field. Every day we focus on living by these key principles to live by to provide “Our Best”

1. Teaching
• Effectively instructs and articulates each movement.
• Focuses on key points and avoids over emphasizing subtle nuances.
• Uses the CrossFit progressions for teaching the more complex movements.

2. Visual perspicacity
• Keenness of mental perception and understanding; discernment; penetration
• Has an excellent ability to discern both gross and subtle form faults.
• Does not miss things and knows what to look for in each movement.
• “The Hawk” – have a mental check list, move around, look at everyone, try to catch everything and pounce on it.
• Without the ability to “see” your training will be sub standard.

3. Presence, voice, command
• Speaks loudly and clearly at all times, modulates voice well, is confident, engaging, commanding.
• Talks just enough to be effective and not at the expense of keeping people moving.
• Demonstrates training as a performance: Be the big YOU (authentic but big), Modulate voice and presence for effect.
• Side note: Training as marketing. You are “on.”

4. Attitude
• Is neither hypercritical nor overly lenient on standards = Balance “form nazi” with celebrating small improvements. Not saying something is good if it is not good, not ignoring small improvements in the right direction.
• Has the ability to genuinely engage a group/individual. Tunes into the personality of the trainee… not all treated the same. At the very least treat trainees with some humanity, conversation, know names etc.
• Is fun and interesting, enthusiastic, smiles, and elicits smiles from others. Gets people moving well or towards well and gets them to enjoy it. Obvious passion for training

5. Managing a Group
• Fosters and maintains group/class cohesion.
• Keeps interest of all at all times, despite difference in experience and ability.
• Engages students by helping them see what he/she sees. Runs the group as a classroom. Create your future trainers. Ex: Heavy Days – teach the major cues then gest people to watch each other – involve them as trainers.

6. Demonstration
• Ensures consistency between what he/she describes and what is demonstrated.
• Trainer knows his/her limits for demonstration but can find a suitable example to replace him/herself while maintaining credibility.
• When using self for demo, does so briefly and then orchestrates the group verbally so he/she can walk around and see others.

Top 10 Reasons Heavy Weights Don’t Bulk Up the Female Athlete

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, In the News, Lifestyle on October 16, 2009 by Fit 605 Inc

Having been in fitness training for over 8 years now. I can’t tell you how many times a woman has came to me and said, “I’m not interested in lifting a lot of weights, I will bulk up”. This is a subject I deal with every year regardless of how much training information is available to the public. I recently came across an interesting article that has a lot of valid points to it.

1. Women do not have nearly as much testosterone as men. In fact, according to Bill Kreamer in Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, women have about 15 to 20 times less testosterone than men. Testosterone is the reason men are men and women are women. After men hit puberty, they grow facial hair, their voice deepens, and they develop muscle mass. Because men have more testosterone, they are much more equipped to gain muscle. Because women do not have very much testosterone in their bodies, they will never be able to get as big as men.
2. The perception that women will bulk up when they begin a strength training program comes from the chemically-altered women on the covers of bodybuilding magazines. These “grocery stand models” are most likely pumped full of some extra juice. This is why they look like men. If you take the missing link that separates men from women and add it back in, what do you have? A man!
3. For women, toning is what happens when the muscle is developed through training. This is essentially bodybuilding without testosterone. Since the testosterone is not present in sufficient amounts, the muscle will develop, but it won’t gain a large amount of mass. The “toned” appearance comes from removing the fat that is covering a well-developed muscle.
4. Heavy weights will promote strength not size. This has been proven time and time again. When lifting weights over 85 percent, the primary stress imposed upon the body is placed on the nervous system, not on the muscles. Therefore, strength will improve by a neurological effect while not increasing the size of the muscles.

Getting in touch…with your feet

Posted in In the News, Lifestyle on October 14, 2009 by Fit 605 Inc
Big Mike brings the intensity at 530am!

Big Mike brings the intensity at 530am!

Most of you have seen myself, Annie, Garrett, and Amanda wearing around those funny looking shoes. They are called vibram five fingers.

The reason why they can be beneficial is: “The typical human foot is an anatomical marvel of evolution with 26 bones, 33 joints, 20 muscles, and hundreds of sensory receptors, tendons and ligaments. Like the rest of the body, to keep our feet healthy, they need to be stimulated and exercised.
Stimulating the muscles in your feet and lower legs will not only make you stronger and healthier, it improves your balance, agility and proprioception.” (Taken from http://www.vibramfivefingers.com)

About 20% of adults have flat feet. A small subset of the population suffers from hereditary flat foot, but most of it is developed. Very few of us are actually born with flat foot. Check out this POST and find out what you can do to avoid flat feet in the first place, and if you already have them whether it is possible to reverse the damage.

Post your comments.

CrossFit vs. P90x

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, In the News, Members on October 2, 2009 by Fit 605 Inc
Best ab exercise out there.

Best ab exercise out there.

Now before I say anything, I am not against P90x. Annie and I have the set of DVDs and do them in addition to our CrossFit training. Funny thing is, I still watch the infomercials when I see them on TV. I think there is nothing wrong with P90x. I like it. But it is funny to me when I hear people say, “Isn’t CrossFit like P90x?” Or, “P90x is just as tough as CrossFit”. That is when I disagree. From the outside looking in, I can understand how the average gym goer may think they are similar, but after you read this you will have an educated opinion about the differences between the two.

Then you will know what to tell your family and friends that ever make that comment.

CrossFit Sioux Falls on Kelo with the Bod Pod

Looking good Rob on the Headstand

Looking good Rob on the Headstand

Last week I had a chance to do the Bod Pod on KELO TV. The Bod Pod is a body fat and caloric analyzer. It is the latest form of technology and gives you the most accurate information vs. body calipers or a dunk tank.

The reason why I would suggest it is to give yourself the information of how much calories you burn on a daily basis as well as your accurate body fat percentage.

It is a great tool to use as a starting point and tracker for body composition.

Watch this quick video with yours truly in it: http://www.keloland.com/videoarchive/index.cfm?VideoFile=091409bodpod

Who is still feeling Monday's Dumbell Lunges?

Who is still feeling Monday's Dumbell Lunges?

Tonight is the season premiere of my favorite show on TV, The Biggest Loser.

Working out and eating right has been a passion of mine for a long time. I am fascinated with how you can change your body and your life so dramatically through fitness. I love how the Biggest Loser gives people the right perspective of if you want REAL results you have to do REAL work. So much of today’s society wants the results right away, ready made, easy and handed to you. All I have to say is lets get real!

CrossFit has a similar type of approach because are workouts are HARD really hard, but they work and they are under an hour. Nutrition is the foundation of our results. We don’t sugar coat anything. You deserve everything you work for especially with your fitness goals. We provide a REAL RAW approach to fitness and that is why are people and testimonials speak for themselves.

Just show up! Results just happen here!

Remembering The Fallen: CrossFit and Hero WOD’s

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, In the News on September 11, 2009 by Fit 605 Inc

DSCF0027

With today marking the 8th year since the events of September 11, 2001, it’s fitting to remember the men and women who have given their lives in the line of duty.

Many of CrossFit’s baseline workouts are named after fallen American soldiers, firefighters, and law enforcement officers to honor their sacrifice. Please take at least a moment today to pray for or think about all that have given up everything so that we may live the way we do and have what we have!

Today’s workout, “Danny” is named after Oakland SWAT officer Daniel Sakai, who was killed in the line of duty this past March along with three other officers. Here is a link to his memorial site, check it out.
