Tracking Progress: Write It Down!

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, Lifestyle, Members on October 5, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

Making progress in the gym is the most basic goal of everyone here at CFSF.

Gains in the gym are the simplest, most direct measure this progress; better scores prove that training hard, eating clean, and taking care of yourself all equates to improved fitness. Keeping accurate records of your workouts and results will help to track this, as anyone who journals will tell you.

Keeping track of scores and times on daily WOD’s is a good place to start, but with the variation of CrossFit training, it’s sometimes difficult to put all of those numbers to use.

How much time have you spent looking for a specific score through all of those pages of workout journals?

Sometimes you may find a time or weight that you thought was your current personal record (PR), but it turns out that you could’ve done much better. Without consistently adding weight each time you perform a lift or finishing faster each time you do a certain WOD, you really won’t get any better.

To help with this, we’ve put together some super-cool record sheets which include nearly all of the lifts that we will practice and use in WOD’s. Each different lift is broken-up by reps, so you can know your true PR for 5, 3, and 1 reps respectively.

These sheets have been added to the blog’s list of forms titled: “Personal Lifting Record Sheet” , and we encourage everyone to print and add them to your journal. We will soon also be adding record sheets for all of the named/whiteboard WOD’s so that you can keep track of those scores.

NOW IS THE TIME for many of you to begin utilizing these great tools to aid in your success.

Keep working hard!

Can you Save your Own Life if you “HAD” to?

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, Members on September 23, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

Have You Got What It Takes???

One of the central claims in CrossFit is that the fitness you get by participating is “functional.”

Well, what should the measure of functional be outside of the gym?

In 1926 a gentleman by the name of Earle Liederman published a book in which he claimed that every man should be able to save his own life (sorry, ladies – back in the day women couldn’t save their own lives), and he included the 5 benchmarks that would ensure that you could count on yourself in the event of an emergency – they include standards for:

-swimming
-running
-jumping
-pull ups
-dips

Liederman claims that “If [a man] can accomplish these things he need have no fear concerning the safety of his life should he be forced into an emergency from which he alone may be able to save himself.”

Look HERE to see how you measure up. Ladies too.

What are the MYTHS of CrossFit???

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy on September 22, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

CrossFit makes you BULKY...yeah right!

There is a lot of chatter about CrossFit in Sioux Falls.

We have covered quite a few of the the myths of CrossFit. Here are some of my favorites…

Too expensive: Click HERE for that one.

-“I have to get in shape, before I start CrossFit“: Click HERE for that one.

-“I have NO TIME to workout“: Click HERE

-“I’m gonna get bulky doing CrossFit“: Click HERE

What are some of the myths you have heard?

And more importantly, what is your response to them?

What were the thoughts you had about CrossFit before you joined?

How have they changed?

Walk It Out

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy on September 21, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

If you have ever watched a UFC fight on TV you have sees the fighters preparing for their entrance to the octagon and their “Walk Out” song is blaring over the loud speakers to get them in the right frame of mind for the job at hand. Examples include “Eye of the Tiger” and “A Country Boy Can Survive” depending on the personality of the individual. Additionally, if you watch the pregame warm ups of college or professional football players, many athletes will have their iPods attached to their hip listening to their favorite music…whether that is calming/soothing music to settle nerves or intense jams to set the tone for the game, most people utilize some form of audio stimulation prior to a competition.

In the CrossFit community there are different takes on this as well. Some boxes blare music while other locations keep it quiet. From hip-hop to heavy metal, the right tune can make the WOD that much more intense and easier to complete.

We have the finals of the Fight Gone Bad challenge coming up on Saturday. In preparation for this challenge, do you have a favorite tune on your playlist that gets the adrenaline flowing? We would like to expand our selection of tunes and need some input.

As a sneak peek, an epic playlist will be put together for the 6:30 p.m. OLY class on Thursday for a few individuals who are going to be out of town on Saturday but will be jamming out for the FGB challenge a few days early.

What would be playing over the speakers if you were walking into the arena to compete? You have prepared physically over the last few weeks for this upcoming Saturday…what music or artist gets you prepared for the 3…2…1…GO?

I will start with my choices…
-Artist – anything from Rage Against the Machine (RATM)
-Song – Not Afraid from Eminem

Quality Assurance – Delivering a Quality Product

Recently, CrossFit HQ distributed notification that all individuals that have taken the Level 1 certification are required to take a written examination of the fundamentals of the CrossFit methodology. The main reason for this requirement is to ensure that the quality of the product is maintained at a high level. In addition to passing the test, all trainers and affiliates will be required to take the assessment every 5 years to emphasize continuing education.

This is something we take very seriously because we are responsible for upholding the quality and integrity of the organization and the product that is delivered.

As many of us travel around the country for jobs or vacation, there is a strong likelihood that we will ‘drop-in’ on a box or affiliate and participate with other Kool-Aid drinkers. It is very apparent when we have a guest at CFSF that has had proper coaching and knows how to perform the required exercises in the WOD.

In addition to listening to the coaching staff during their explanations and demonstrations and performing each exercise with the proper range of motion on every repetition, what additional resources or routines do you utilize to further your knowledge of CrossFit?

Do you read publications or subscribe to the CrossFit Journal?

Do you stay after class to work on proper form of a lift or exercise that is pointed out to you during a WOD?

Are YOU a student of the game???

Ask one of the coaches for help if you have questions – we are here to help!

Keeping ourselves accountable when nobody is watching is vitally important to maintaining high standards…it could be your classmate that is looking up to you.

CFSF Rules to Live By at the Box…Journaling Your WOD is MANDATORY!

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, Lifestyle, Members on September 8, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

Now that everyone is back in there ‘normal’ fall routine. Its time we discuss something very simple, sometimes overlooked, but MANDATORY to get you to your goals and beyond…JOURNAL every WOD every time!

I have to admit I am guilty to not journaling every WOD I do…but that all changes TODAY!

We all do CrossFit because we desire to take our fitness to the next level and in order to “Take it to the Next Level” you must have YOUR journaling habits in place.

A lot you are guilty to “NOT JOURNALING”. When you forget, get lazy, not “FEEL” like it, or don’t want to; then you are GUILTY as charged.

If and when you feel like you any of those characteristic next time look at the people who are journaling, most every single person that is, is probably BETTER than you at CrossFit currently. So if you copy the habits they do, then you will get their type of results.

Why do this? There are a ton of reasons. The main benefits include:

– Accurate tracking of progress through logging work out variables
– Effective and precise planning of future work outs (knowing how you performed previously will eliminate guesswork). It is 100% objective, no excuses, nothing wishy washy, just accurate data you can’t argue.
– Heightened motivation and intensity through striving to beat previous bests. (boy do we know about that…)
– Increased focus and efficiency through having a clear, written plan.

Your goals and results are at your fingertips…LITERALLY!

To get an idea of what your journal MUST look like…

Confess now if you are guilty and make it up by declaring your will start the journaling habit today!

If you are an avid journal’er help everyone out and tell us why you journal and the importance it has had for you and your success at CF.
