The Diary of a Scale

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, Lifestyle, Members on June 10, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

You all know how much I love the scale. We found this in prevention magazine. Check out the pic below and comment your thoughts.

Have you ever weighed yourself like this person?
Do you weigh yourself like this person???

I hope you can see the ridiculousness of this article. Weighing yourself is not a bad thing unless you let it be.

Attitude of a Champion

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy on June 9, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

When you CrossFit you are and do much more than your average person. It takes a certain kind of person with a certain kind of attitude to go through the kind of WODs we do. I am always fascinated with the human potential and what we can do. Not only physically, but mentally, to continually push ourselves to the next level. Below are 5 crucial characteristics to do such that…Enjoy and MAKE IT HAPPEN!

The Winner’s Circle by Denis Waitley

If the five Olympic rings were attitudes of champions in every profession, these five attitudes would be prominent in the mindset of the peak performer:

1. Paying the Price — Everyone wants to win, but few are willing to invest the time and effort. Paying the price means focusing on developing the skills and training regimen of champions – observation, imitation, repetition and the internalization of knowledge into habits; also, learning why and how to go the extra mile and seeing success as a marathon, not a dash. Champions view failures as temporary inconveniences and learning experiences.

2. The Olympian Within — Winners believe in their worth in advance of their performance. Most people base their worth on their current status or achievement level, which means that until they are judged successful by society’s standards, they have little to be proud of. Champions believe in their dreams when they have only a dream to hang on to, even in the face of criticism and superior achievements by others.

3. Non-situational Integrity — Authentic, lasting winners have an uncompromising attitude about self-honesty. They function according to an “integrity triangle”, consisting of three basic questions: (a) Are my beliefs based upon truth? (b) Do my words and actions correspond with truth and honesty? (c) Before I speak or act, do I honestly consider the impact of my decision on other people and the environment?

4. The “Coachability” Factor — Champions are always open to alternatives to improve their performance. Consistent winners are not the arrogant egotists who dominate the media spotlight. The most successful individuals in the game of life are often the most approachable, most gracious, non-judgmental with others and most critical of their own performances, as well as most eager to learn and improve.

5. Being a Team Player — a team in harmony is synergy in motion, where the whole is greater than the sum of the individual talents. When all assignments are understood, when each takes 100 percent responsibility for the outcome, a quantum leap in performance takes place. Winners learn how to become interdependent, without sacrificing individuality; how to stand out, while fitting in.

So its self check time; what out of the 5 characteristics to you have? What one’s do or want to work on? Tell Us.

A Great Way to Measure Health and Fitness

Posted in Lifestyle, Members on June 4, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

What do most Americans use their measure of fitness?
-The scale?
-Body Fat testing?
-Measuring themselves?
-A Before and After Photo?

Are they 100% objective???

What do you think is the best?

What about taking a blood test? Blood tests are used to determine physiological and biochemical states, such as disease, mineral content, drug effectiveness, and organ function. That would seem to me the most accurate information.

Recently Nick Liesinger went to get some blood work done to see what is going on, on the inside. He has been a dedicated CrossFitter and Paleo Caveman for the last year. The Result? An amazing change. Read his story:

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Chris, Annie,

I just got my results back from the blood test, and they’re phenomenal. My cholesterol numbers last year before Crossfit were 116 total and 29 for HDL. On the new test, my total cholesterol is much higher—176, but my HDL is 59 (wow!) and 89.7% of my LDL is large buoyant (another wow!) which doesn’t cause plaque on arterial walls. My triglycerides are also super low at 40 mg/dl. My only problem is low Vitamin D (24 ng/mL), and I’ve been taking 5,000IU a day, so it’s either that I’m taking some crappy stuff or I can’t absorb the stuff I’m taking. So I’m going to get more sun and a higher-grade supplement.

Bottom line—even eating paleo 75% of the time with occasional cheat meals and some dairy is still yielding me fantastic results. If I keep this up, I won’t be following in my father’s footsteps with a heart attack at 49. I owe you both so much because having you introduce me to this lifestyle is saving my life. Thanks so much!

Great job Nick!

If You Ever Wondered Why We Do Sooooo Much Overhead Lifting

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy on June 3, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

Casey is showing us FULL LOCKOUT

Check out the info below and give us your thoughts.

In the article Overhead is Rising from the CF Journal, BIll Starr outlines 6 reasons overhead lifting is a safe and essential fitness tool to developing your athletic potential:

1.”Convertible” Strength – The strength gained from doing presses and other overhead exercises is applicable to more athletic events than any other shoulder girdle movement—especially those sports that require the athletes to extend their arms overhead, including basketball, volleyball, tennis, baseball, lacrosse, swimming, the field events in track(javelin, shot put), and nearly every position in football.

2.Proportionate Strength – Overhead exercises develop a more proportionate strength in the shoulder girdle than any other upper body movement. Presses, jerks, push presses, and push jerks create wide, powerful arms and shoulders, with less emphasis on the chest muscles, which play a minor role in nearly every sport. Overhead work does hit the high portion of the chest—a good thing since that part of the pecs helps to stabilize the shoulder girdle.

3.More Flexibility – Overhead exercises do not hinder shoulder flexibility. Rather, they enhance it—an important point for anyone participating in a sport which requires a high degree of shoulder flexibility, such as gymnastics, the martial arts, and wrestling.

4.Works Back, Hips, even Legs – While most upper body exercises only work the groups that make up the shoulder girdle, overhead movements also strengthen the back, from the traps to the lumbars, and also directly involve the hips, glutes, and legs. Most do not think about how much the back is utilized during overhead lifts.

5.Protects Rotator Cuffs – The area of the back that get the most sore is usually the middle or right over his shoulder blades. Gaining and maintaining strength in this latter area is extremely beneficial since this is where the muscles that constitute the rotator cuffs are located. Back when the overhead press was the primary upper body exercise, rotator cuff injuries were unheard of.

6.Balance and Good Looks – The overhead lifts belong in the routine of every athlete. Presses, jerks, push presses, and push jerks build a more balanced and pleasing physique than other upper body exercises.

New Coach at the Box

Browny is ready to help take YOU to the next level

We are very excited to announce the addtion of Michael Brownfield to our CFSF Coaching staff. Browny has been CrossFitting with us since early August of last year. And his CrossFit resume is already quite impressive:

-He was a member of our CFSF FTS Affiliate Team last month in Denver
-He is a member of CFSF PaleoHolics
-He is certified with his CrossFit Level 1
-He is certified with his CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting (June 20, 2010)
-He is a student of CrossFit and is always finding ways to improve himself and is one of the first to lend a helping hand with anyone that wants to take their fitness and CrossFit to the next level.

Here is Browny’s story:

Athletics have always been a large part of my life. Growing up in an active family provided the ability to participate in many different activities. Anything that involved training and spending time in the gym grabbed my attention. During high school I knew that I wanted to further my days of playing football and that led me to the decision to play at the collegiate level.

After my playing career ended I was able to be on staff at my alma mater and coached alongside some of the most gifted people in terms of driving individuals to perform at an extremely high level. The coaching staff had an amazing ability to inspire their players to achieve goals outside of their scope of vision. The competitive nature of the sport and the mental training that accompanied it stayed with me well after my final game was played and coached.

After many years of the traditional gym experience I stumbled across this amazing thing called CrossFit. It sparked the competitive feeling that I knew was still there and offered an outlet to challenge myself physically and mentally. CrossFit has allowed me to achieve things that I thought were impossible and introduced a new sport that I want to play for the rest of my life.

My main goal is to lead by example and introduce as many people to CrossFit as possible because I believe in what it can do for an individual. We all can knock down obstacles and reach higher. If there is anything I can do to help just ask!

New Month…New Goals…Have a New Mindset

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, Lifestyle, Members on June 1, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

Ahhh the tire flipping season is here

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me.” PSALM 51:10

“We set ourselves up either for misery or for job by the mindset that we have toward the things in our life”…Think this applies to our WODs???

“Mindsets are the patterns in which our mind normally operates toward a certain determination.” For example, when we hear what the WOD is from a friend (even before you get to the box) or when you walk into CFSF and look at the whiteboard…

What goes through your mind first? Joy? Or dread? How does that affect your mental game pre-WOD? Your performance during the workout? How you feel afterwards?

Refuse to dread what MUST be done. Greet the day (and each WOD) with the right attitude and a thankful heart and know that the coaches and your CFSF teammates are right there with you every step of the way.

Now take that same positive, thankful and progressive approach to taking this time NOW to set and re-set your goals for this month of June. Pick one, two, three goals you WILL accomplish and work diligently towards and MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Post and JUST DO IT!

Posted in Lifestyle, Members, Nutrition on May 28, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

All Park WODs tomorrow. Learn to love the hill

If you want your bod to to be as hot as the weather we are having lately. Then Paleo is the way to get you there the fastest. Below is a quick reference to help get you started:

-Stay around 4-6 ounces (30-40g) of protein in every meal you eat.

-Stay right at 50 grams of carbs a day. Consume 1/2 of your 50g (25g) of carbs immediately following your workout, and have 0g of fats.

-Limit your fruits daily, also preferably most earlier in the day.

-Increase vegetables daily

-Drink water: A good range is half your bodyweight in ounces (160 lbs = 80 oz of water)

-Consume most all of your fats from avocado’s and oils (coconut, olive, etc…) and limit your nut intake.
