What Did Your Workouts Used Look Like?

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, Lifestyle, Members on February 10, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

A bunch of us were talking after class one day about what their workouts “used to” consist of. When I started to think about it and look at my old notes I really noticed how far I have come with my fitness and personal gains.

So what about you?

Whether you have been here 6 days, 6 weeks, or 6 months; “What Did Your Workouts Used Look Like?”

Tell us the difference that CrossFit has made not only in the gym with your physical benefits, but the results it has provided, the friends you have made and what you have learned about yourself.

Alright CFSF we have a Bitter/Sweet Situation:

Bitter: As most of you know we recently have lost Garrett Strating:-(

Sweet: While it sucks that we do not have the pleasure of having his awesome spirit, energy, work ethic and positivity around us any longer, it is great that he is moving up North and spreading the good word of CrossFit.

In my opinion there is no one better suited to create a very similar AWESOME CrossFit community that we have than Garrett. We will keep you updated with his status on the happenings of a future CrossFit Fargo/CrossFit 701…or whatever evolves up there in the arctic:-)

Garrett is officially linked to our blog roll on the right.

Fitness is “Super Wellness”

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, Lifestyle, Members on February 5, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

CrossFit has observed that every quantifiable measure of health that typically declines with age is improved by exercise. Furthermore, these measures can be placed on a continuum that ranges from sickness to wellness to fitness. From this view fitness is seen to be a hedge against sickness. Blood pressure, body fat, bone density, triglycerides, “good” and “bad” cholesterol, flexibility, and muscle mass each follow this pattern. Done right, fitness provides a nice margin of protection against the ravages of time and disease. Fitness is and should be “super-wellness.” taken from crossfit.com

You can basically be bullet proof to diseases and sickness:-)

What exactly is Paleo?

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, Nutrition on January 29, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

Chris won the heisman for the dot drill this week

I know a lot of us in this first week of our Paleo Challenge have had a lot of questions about what exactly Paleo food is…. “Can I eat this… is this Paleo” “Are nuts a protein?” “Can we have some grains?” etc…..

Here is a brief in depth synopsis on the essential meaning of Paleo:

The Paleo Diet Plan – An Overview – The Paleo or Paleolithic Diet is basically raw unprocessed low carbohydrate foods. This includes fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and a big no to cereals and diary products.

The first principle is to eat a lot of produce, mainly vegetables. The glycemic index and glycemic load of carbohydrates consumed should be in low quantities. The fat intake should have maximum content of omega 3 fatty acids. The exposure to potentially allergenic foods should be limited. The consumption of calories should be proportionate to the level of activity. As much as possible try to eat fruits that does not contain much sugar. The Berries that are rich sources of antioxidants are a perfect example of Paleo diet.

Moreover, as the food is stored for a longer period the potency of anti-oxidants is reduced. Hence it is preferred to eat fresh foods that are free of preservatives. At the same time vegetables can be taken in semi cooked fashion. Raw vegetables can be taken in the form of salads. The steamed vegetables such as green beans, broccoli, zucchini and carrots can be made tastier with natural dressing like a dash of lime, onions and fresh basil leaves.

Carbohydrate rich foods such as bread, rice, pasta, and potatoes are a big no in Paleo Diet.

The type of fat that is consumed has a note worthy impact on the body metabolism of carbohydrates. Besides it also affects the immune system and inflammatory processes in the body. The intake of fatty foods high in omega 6 fats, low in omega 3 fats and unsaturated fats vs. more saturated fat and Trans fats is undesirable because this leads to chronic heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Intake of lot of grains rich in omega 6 fatty acids is harmful to your health. At the same time wild game meats and fish rich in omega 3 fatty acids is good for your health. In the case of beef the content of omega 3 or omega 6 fats is determined by the feeding pattern of cattle. The ideal source of omega 3 supplements are derived from marine sources like fish and algae oil.~assiciatedcontent.com

You all rocked it this first week, keep up the great work!!!!

What is Coaching at CrossFit Sioux Falls?

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy on January 13, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

I got into a discussion with a prospective student about our program and how it can lead to some real life changes. I went on to explain that we provide fitness and nutrition coaching, specifically CrossFit and The Paleo Diet. This got me thinking about what “coaching” really is and why it is so important to the success of our students!

Here’s what I found as a definition of Coaching: “Coaching is a method of directing, instructing and training a person or group of people, with the aim to achieve some goal or develop specific skills. There are many ways to coach, types of coaching and methods to coaching. Sessions are typically one-on-one either in-person or over the telephone. Direction may include motivational speaking. Training may include seminars, workshops, and supervised practice.”

This Wikipedia definition matches the CrossFit Sioux Falls program to a “T”, and really demonstrates what we stand for. Here at CrossFit Sioux Falls, we are a training program that helps each individual reach personal goals while developing fitness, nutrition and lifestyle skills.

Our coaches are here to guide you to get you to your goals and achieve all that you are capable of. We have an open door policy and are here for each and every one of you whenever for whatever you need! So CrossFitters please don’t hesitate to come to us with anything. We love “coaching” all of you!

We know it says the 12th, but it is the 13th day:-)
