Hit the Sack!

Instead of Coffee Talk think GHD Talk

Having enough time in a day is becoming harder and harder to come by. So what do “most” people do is sacrifice their health.

So what are you going to do sacrifice…
Workouts?
Preparing healthy meals?
How about less sleep?

It is sad to say that sleep seems to go first. Which honestly should be at the TOP of YOUR list!!!

Some people will tell you they “only need 5 hours”, while this may be true from a ‘functional’ standpoint, their health and waistline may be paying the price BIGTIME!

The effects lack of sleep has on the body are numerous – hormonal changes, blood sugar regulation, increased cancer risk, obesity and many more. Now there’s even more research to support the argument that sleep is NOT over rated when it comes to weight regulation. These new findings showed that subjects sleeping only 4 hours per night consumed about 600 more calories per day than those getting 8 hours of shut eye. The sleep deprived also experienced greater feelings of hunger and tiredness throughout the day. The study did find that less sleep equated to more physical activity, although the amount of extra movement did not make up for the additional caloric load.

So, pick it???- the Late Show, finishing the playoff game, or the taking that time to hit the sack??? Your decision may ‘weigh’ more than you think!

So tell us how much sleep you get a night.

Any tricks you do that helps you get to bed and sleep faster and better?

When Your CrossFit Strong…. There Are NO Limits!

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, Lifestyle on May 7, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

Going to the Affiliate Cup this past weekend was a huge eye opener for me. As I watched all the different events I realized some of the girls who looked so incredibly strong were throwing up the same weight as women who looked like an 45lb Olympic bar would be a task. It was unbelievable to watch 95lb women snatch a 95lb bar, or clean and jerk 145.

When I first started CrossFit, I had no desire to lift weight in fear that I would “gain” weight; but last summer I made a decision to myself that I was going to completely sell out to the program. I would no longer live in “fear” of getting better and achieving goals I didn’t think I was capable of! I chose a motto I was going to live by: “Size doesn’t matter” and let me tell you it DOESN’T! Not only have I lost weight since lifting more, I am now running faster than I did in high school, I am doing more pull-ups, squats, and pushups (body weight calisthenics) that I ever thought possible, all because I made a choice to become better!

Words can’t describe the feeling of Overhead squatting your body weight, or doing a deadlift 1 1/2 times your weight. It makes you not only physically tough but mentally tough as well! I want to continue to get stronger and have no holes in my programming (basically being able to do any WOD prescribed). I can’t imagine the mental toughness you will achieve knowing there is nothing that you aren’t capable of!

You Better Stretch and Foam Roll…or Else Enter the Fuzz Concept

GREAT ARTICLE AND MOTIVATOR TO GET YOU ALL STRETCHING AND FOAM ROLLING!!

We found this on the San Francisco CrossFit site and it is AWESOME!

Two Words….Fuzz

Look. You’ve got to take care of your tissues. This is probably second in importance only to the universal “protect your crotch” law. Stretching or mobilizing your tight business is always a good idea, but in reality as about as sexy as laundry and taxes.
But, really, who cares if your performance suffers, or you get pulled into terribly technique poor positioning, or are really weak at the end ranges of your range of motion, or you are wearing out your joint surfaces?

Enter the Fuzz Concept.

CFSF Rules to Live By: Throw away your scale!

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, Lifestyle, Members on April 29, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

Kimmy and Amy are taking their FITness to the next level

For those of you who have been CrossFitting for a while know that CrossFit is a very very different way of getting FIT vs. the traditional/globol/commercial gym way.

Counting calories, FAT free diets, slim fast BS, and weighing yourself every 10 minutes is NOT the way to get FIT PERMANETLY!

When you CrossFit gaining weight is a “GOOD” thing:-)

CrossFitters know that when you gain weight you gain MUSCLE.

CrossFitters know that muscle is our BFF because muscle is the only natural and best FATburner on the market.

CrossFitters know that muscle burns FAT 24/7.

CrossFitters know that muscle helps us not only prevent injury but also help you heal previous injuries faster and better.

Lastly, CrossFitters know that muscle makes you lean, long and strong.

When you have a ROCK HARD Body do you really care how much you weigh on that “SCALE”…I think not:-)

So CrossFitters tell us your “throwing away the scale story”.

And if you haven’t throw that scale away yet…what are you waiting for???

Why Try ….. Just Do!!!

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, CrossFit Workouts, Uncategorized on April 27, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

When I looked up the word try in the Webster’s Dictionary here is what I read:
Try: “To make an attempt at”.

When Chris and I lived in Los Angeles, I remember a phrase he used to live by: “Using the word Try is just an easy way to let yourself off the hook”. Every time we say we will “try” we are giving ourselves an out to the situation! For example, I remember in the beginning of CrossFit I would look at a weight or WOD and think “well I guess I’ll try to do it” (basically saying if it gets too heavy or to hard I can drop down in weight or scale it). I had already given myself an out before I even started!

By giving yourself an out, you will never be able to reach your full potential in life and in CrossFit! Now I look at a weight that is intimidating or WOD’s that look impossible and say “I’m going to do this or I’m going to kill this” etc…. I have now given myself NO OUTS!

Words are very powerful, and the more we tell ourselves we can and we will the more successes we will see!

Crossfitters… I challenge you to no longer say “try” and tell yourself you can, and the results will astound you!

To Scale or Rx’d a WOD…that is the Question What is YOUR Answer???

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, CrossFit Workouts, Members on April 23, 2010 by Fit 605 Inc

Pigs on ice skates anyone?

When should you scale a WOD, if at all?

As an athlete/member, what goes through your mind when you see a workout that you know you can perform RX, but at the same time will take you twice as long to perform?

Should you scale the workout?

Or is the time component irrelevant to you? What is more important – finishing the workout regardless of how long it takes you, or, scaling the workout so that you preserve the stimulus and are able to maintain a high power output (i.e. high intensity) throughout the entire WOD?

Post thoughts to comments.

1. The stopwatch is your best friend, NOT your enemy.

2. When, dealing with injury (notice I said when, not if) stop what your doing and take care of it. Period.

3. Standards are also your best friend, NOT your enemy. Without them we would never know our true potential.

4. There is no such thing as weakness if you work at them often enough.

5. Know your strengths and keep them that way.

6. Smile: It cost nothing but means everything.

7. Once you have mastered the mechanics of a movement it’s your duty and obligation to teach it to others. A great coach is a by-product of a great athlete.

8. If you don’t like the Zone Diet then consume 40g of Carbohydrates, 30g of Protein, and 30g of Fat with each meal.

9. Goals: We all have the same kinds of goals just different degrees.

10. Nobody is forcing you to do Crossfit so have FUN with it.

Thoughts? Agree/Disagree? Anything to add?
