“Angry Gorilla” Leads to Perfect Deadlift Form

Look at Cody doing a perfect deadlift!

In my experience the deadlift is one of the most difficult exercises to achieve perfect form, especially with a max load and various repetitions. I have struggled myself with this exercise, and after struggling with a back injury I wasn’t sure I’d be able to deadlift in Workout any longer. I have seen people start out with good form, but as the workout wears on the most common mistake is to forget about your legs and start using your back as fatigue sets in.

After attending the CrossFit Kids certification, I had an eye opening experience!!! Teach adults the same you would teach the kids, and that is where the term “Angry Gorilla” came to be known. When instructing kids you need to break it down make it relate as simple as possible, and they understand the movements better.

I instructed my first workout after the kids certification, and had the adults get into an “Angry Gorilla” to prep for their deadlift. Low and behold, across the board every single person in my class did a perfect deadlift! As the workout went on as people’s form started to slip I would yell out “Angry Gorilla” and BOOM they would automatically fix themselves back to perfect form. The next day no one complained about back aches, just booty aches (which is what I love to hear)!!! So for all of you sloppy deadlifters here is the most simplistic way to correct your problem:

Take a wide stance (sumo stance) and make your hands into a fist. Bring your fists down to the ground in between your feet. Lower the hips and raise your chest (just like a deadlift) and look like an ‘angry gorilla.’ Swing your arms forward and place them far in front of you. While keeping a nice back position, place all your weight on your hands and swing your body forward. Assume the angry gorilla stance and reset the back. Continue moving forward for the designated distance.

Here is a link to the CrossFit Journal on the Deadlift, which highlights the Angry Gorilla stance:

The CrossFit Community

Nice Muscle Up Garrett!

Nice Muscle Up Garrett!

One of the greatest parts about our CrossFit is the community aspect that it produces among everyone. Even better, this community goes beyond just Sioux Falls; it literally stretches as far you can reach. This is largely made possible by the fact that every affiliate out there has their own blog, open to everyone.

I spend a lot of my free time checking out other sites and blogs, and it’s amazing how much I’ve learned about CrossFit, fitness, and just healthy living in general. There is a ton of great info out there if you’re willing to look for it. Here are some very cool ones that I enjoy:

http://www.robbwolf.com – amazing resource for the Paleo diet and connecting it to your training; Robb is ridiculously smart but helps simplify a lot

http://www.cathletics.com – tons of great stuff about all things CrossFit and more. Greg Everett is one of the top CF trainers out there and this site provides a lot…even a sweet pic of your very own Cody Burgener!

http://www.paleobrands.com -Paleo snacks and cookies, enough said!

CrossFit Sioux Falls Get ready for CrossFit Kids

Brooks Nelson, 6 years old and already got a pullup. Just think of him at 16!

I just got back from the CrossFit Kids Certification in Hunington Beach CA and I received some amazing information! CrossFit Kids is not simply a scaled down version of CrossFit it is absolutely, entirely CrossFit.

It’s geared and designed for a special population and the specific developmental needs of that population. (cognitive, neurological, mental). Through CrossFit Kids children learn more efficiently, behave better, they feel good about themselves and most of all they have FUN doing it! Now not only can the adults at CrossFit see results and get better, so can your kids.

It has been my passion from day one to make kids aware of what “healthy” is. My mission is to get our kids to think working out is like parents going to work; it must be done! This is the first generation that our children are going to die before us if we don’t make a change. CrossFit Sioux Falls wants to make that change!

Come on out October 17th at 11am bring your kids ages 3 to 15 and lets make a positive step in the right direction.

Question of the day:
What is your favorite kids game? (duck duck goose, dodgeball, etc)

CrossFit vs. P90x

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, In the News, Members on October 2, 2009 by Fit 605 Inc
Best ab exercise out there.

Best ab exercise out there.

Now before I say anything, I am not against P90x. Annie and I have the set of DVDs and do them in addition to our CrossFit training. Funny thing is, I still watch the infomercials when I see them on TV. I think there is nothing wrong with P90x. I like it. But it is funny to me when I hear people say, “Isn’t CrossFit like P90x?” Or, “P90x is just as tough as CrossFit”. That is when I disagree. From the outside looking in, I can understand how the average gym goer may think they are similar, but after you read this you will have an educated opinion about the differences between the two.

Click HERE and read this blog by Catalyst Gym, a CrossFit affiliate, and post your comments.

Then you will know what to tell your family and friends that ever make that comment.

The most overlooked benefits of CrossFit: Confidence, Character, and Mental Toughness

We train HARD! We train to get RESULTS! That is the obvious. What about something that is maybe even more important and sometimes overlooked…the mental toughness CrossFit provides.

CrossFit bleeds through much more than the physical benefits we push past mental and physical barriers more than ever and during every single workout, if YOU truly push yourself.

Well…do you?

All of these 3 aspects, confidence, character, and mental toughness, go hand in hand and build off of each other. Be confident in your abilities and accomplishments, build character through the ups and downs of training, and always believe in yourself during the workouts and find the strength and mental toughness that is within you.

How to Gain Flexibility through CrossFitting

Posted in Crossfit Philosophy, CrossFit Workouts on September 17, 2009 by Fit 605 Inc
Wall Squats.....How's this for flexibility?

Wall Squats.....How's this for flexibility?

Most don’t realize not only can you get stronger, leaner, and more powerful from CrossFit, you can also gain more flexibility. Doing the everyday exercises with CrossFit, can lead to phenomenal flexibility just by tweaking a few moves.

When you are doing an air squat, make sure to keep your feet hip width apart and point your feet as if it were a clock at ten and two. This allows for a deeper squat, and more flexibility in your hips. Keeping “Active Shoulders”, when doing an overhead squat, snatch, shoulder press, push press, push jerk, and clean and jerks allows for much more range of motion, flexibility in your back and also in your shoulders.

You can also do stretches with the CrossFit equipment. You can use a kettlebell to stretch out your hips, back and arms. Pullup bars and boxes work wonders for your body as well! So remember CrossFitters correct form is the key to gaining unlimited flexibility.

Where do you want to gain more flexibility with CrossFit?

-Active shoulders
-Kettlebell stretches
-Feet at 10 and 2 to allow a deeper squat with moving your hips into proper alignment

Who is still feeling Monday's Dumbell Lunges?

Who is still feeling Monday's Dumbell Lunges?

Tonight is the season premiere of my favorite show on TV, The Biggest Loser.

Working out and eating right has been a passion of mine for a long time. I am fascinated with how you can change your body and your life so dramatically through fitness. I love how the Biggest Loser gives people the right perspective of if you want REAL results you have to do REAL work. So much of today’s society wants the results right away, ready made, easy and handed to you. All I have to say is lets get real!

CrossFit has a similar type of approach because are workouts are HARD really hard, but they work and they are under an hour. Nutrition is the foundation of our results. We don’t sugar coat anything. You deserve everything you work for especially with your fitness goals. We provide a REAL RAW approach to fitness and that is why are people and testimonials speak for themselves.

Just show up! Results just happen here!
